How to Make Cold Brew Coffee with Alto Cold Brew

Ah cold brew coffee.

To coffee aficionados, it’s a staple in their coffee consuming lifestyle. To some, it’s the ‘cousin to iced coffee.’

For those who are not super familiar, cold brew is made with a process of leaching flavor from coffee beans which produces a chemical profile different from conventional brewing methods.

While more caffeine can be extracted from coffee beans with hot water than with cold water, cold brew coffee is typically made with a higher ratio of coffee to water ― we're talking 2 to 2 1/2 times more ― which means it is stronger than if made with a more conventional coffee-to-water ratio. Because cold brew is made without heat, it creates lower acidity for a smoother, naturally sweet taste. Iced coffee is brewed double strength then cooled, which creates a refreshing, lighter body. It's served sweetened, often with a splash of milk.

If you’re looking to get a feel for making it yourself, our Home Cold Brew Kit is everything you need to make 30 batches of cold brew at home! Just add coffee and water. This kit includes a 68 oz pitcher with a locking / sealing lid and 30 Alto Home Filters.

Once you’ve fallen in love with the process you can get more filters here. These Alto Home Cold Brew Filters are ideal for half gallon and gallon batches of cold brew using 6oz to 12oz of coarse ground coffee.  Steep grounds in a wide mouth pitcher (larger than 3.5") for 12 to 16 hours and simply dispose of the filter bag. Each pack contains: 30 disposable filters with cotton string.

How to Make Cold Brew Coffee:

  1. Fill pitcher with your favorite coarsely ground beans.
  2. Place filter inside of the pitcher.
  3. Add 6 cups of water.
  4. Let steep in fridge for 8-12 hours.
  5. Strain the coffee concentrate.
  6. Enjoy as concentrate over ice or with water / milk.

Onward, coffee lovers.
